Waterproof flooring options to consider

Up until recently, the only waterproof flooring choices were tile and luxury vinyl. While both are lovely flooring materials, there are now two more to consider: waterproof vinyl flooring and waterproof laminate flooring. Everyone needs a waterproof floor no matter where they live because we all have those moments when the dishwasher floods or we spill liquids.

What does waterproof mean?

When something is waterproof, it is utterly impervious to liquid, and it's made from entirely waterproof materials. Engineered vinyl is an example, and it's impenetrable from bottom to top, meaning that it can either be submerged or spilled on. Water-resistant means there is always a possibility that liquid can absorb, soak, stain and ripple.

What is waterproof vinyl?

This material has the same high-end style as luxury vinyl (LVF), with true-to-life images of wood, stone, and tiles available in various colors and patterns. Micro beveling and deep embossing add depth, dimension, and textured appearances such as wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered, and distressed. The material can be cut into long planks to mimic hardwood boards or groutable squares to echo stone and tile.

Just like LVF, this product only needs daily sweeping and periodic mopping. Use a manufacturer-approved cleaner and avoid wax, shine-promoting ones as they can dull the surface. Installation can be an uncomplicated floating floor where the pieces click together, mat, and then hover over the subfloor.

Another alternative: waterproof laminate

This is a unique construction that keeps spills from absorbing. While laminate has long been a popular, affordable alternative to wood, it was avoided for use in kitchens and baths because of those room's excessive water and steam. Now you can install it anywhere in the house! Just be sure to be very specific with the flooring expert as to whether you want the waterproof or original version.

This, too, is an easy-care and uncomplicated installation that can be floating floor. Installation can also be an uncomplicated floating floor, which is click, mat, and hover. Subfloors need to be clean, dry, and level.
